The quality of bathing water in the European Union has improved significantly over the past four decades, according to a report by the European Environment Agency.
In 2024, over 85% of bathing waters in almost 22,000 areas in the EU were rated as 'excellent', and 96% of them met at least the minimum quality requirements. This means that most bodies of water are free of pollutants dangerous to human health and the environment.
Only around 1.5% of bathing waters in the EU were of poor quality, with the report indicating that in some of these cases water management measures were inadequate or not effectively implemented.
The countries with the highest number of bathing areas with excellent water quality (over 95%):
• Cyprus – 99.2%
• Bulgaria – 97.9%
• Greece – 97%
• Austria – 95.8%
• Croatia – 95.2%
Countries with the lowest share of bathing waters of excellent quality (below 70%): Belgium – 69.2%, Hungary – 67%, Estonia – 61.5%, Poland – 58.1%.
Bulgaria ranks second in the EU in terms of the cleanliness of bathing waters, making it an attractive destination for summer recreation.
